Myths About Diabetes – Know About The Facts

Eating sugar is not the cause of onset of diabetes. This disease is caused by the combination of inheritance and the lifestyle. Eating diet high in fat and sugar may cause somebody to become overweight. Being overweight may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. So anybody who has the family history of diabetes should take a healthy balanced diet with the regular exercise.

Myth – Uncooked food or food taken in raw form helps in checking diabetes

Fact – The calorie value of foods whether raw or cooked remain unchanged and so is their fattening attribute. The effect of food on human body in terms of calorie accumulation remains the same and this provides no guard against diabetes. It is more important to eat wisely and have a balanced diet whatever the form.

Myth – No Symptoms of Diabetes Appear before Damage Has Occurred

Diabetes is sometimes called “the Silent Disease,” but this is not true. Diabetes actually has plenty of symptoms like increased urination, increased thirst, dry skin, fatigue, blurry vision, irritability, extreme hunger, eating without weight gain, unexpected and unusual weight loss, these symptoms aren’t severe, so they often go unnoticed by parents and caretakers.Put simply, it’s hard to accept the fact that there’s something seriously wrong with body.

Myth – Diabetes is a silent killer:

This concept is not in the list of Native American myths but prevalent all over the countries which is professed by everyone not knowing the contradiction in it.What is there to repeat these threatening words when there are some signs and symptoms of diabetes to experience? Isn’t it really foolish or fantastic? One has to positively agree that a diabetic need not have this meaningless fear about his last breath when he is sure to feel diabetes symptoms. The danger is not with diabetes but the worst of everything follows in ignoring the symptoms of diabetes. Once you have signs of diabetes, you can be safe and secure by consulting your doctor. So, you can feel sure that claiming of diabetes as a silent killer is certainly one of the misconceptions or myths beyond logical sense.

Diabetes sufferers are prone to catching colds and flu. There is no evidence to show that people with diabetes are any more or less likely than anybody else to catch a cold or flu. Diabetics must however try their best to avoid such illnesses (for example by having an annual flue shot) because illnesses of this nature can interfere with levels of blood sugar, and thus make the management of diabetes more difficult.

Myths – People with diabetes shouldn’t eat bananas or grapes.

All fruit and vegetables are extremely good for you. Eating more can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, some cancers and some gut problems. You should aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. This also helps to improve the overall balance of the diet. Eating a variety of different fruit and vegetables ensure you get the maximum benefit.
